Chung Miko from South Korea just moved into her new apartment in Xianlin university town of Nanjing earlier this year. In less than a year, she has become an active member in the community. If you ask about Miko in the neighborhood, the security guards would smile, “oh, the Korean lady!”
Winter in Nanjing is very cold, so every morning when Miko goes to work, she brings a cup of hot coffee for the security guards on duty. Smiling and warm-hearted, the cute chubby lady speaks fluent Chinese, and sometimes tries her hand at Nanjing dialect.
Born in the 1970s, Miko came to study in Nanjing University in 1999, and later married a Chinese man and settled down in Nanjing. She now teaches Korean in Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology. Today her daughter Li Jiaren is in the third grade of elementary school. The longer she stays in China, the more Chinese friends she makes.
Miko was awarded the 2017 Best Cultural Ambassador by Nanjing Public Diplomacy Association on Dec. 15. In 2009, the Nanjing Public Diplomacy Association titled her "Ambassador of Cultural Exchange in Nanjing". Miko is very modest about these honors. she said that she didn’t do anything extraordinary, except for communicating with people around, offering little help and introducing different cultures. “I like Chinese culture, customs and its people. That’s why I married a Chinese,” she smiled.
Miko is a great baker. She cooks cheesecake, spaghetti and chocolate and is particularly good at making gimbap and kimchi, two typical Korean dishes. She teaches her neighbors how to cook them, and even brought them carrot seeds one time when she came back from South Korea. Though a seasoned teacher, she is also a student, as the neighbors also teach her how to make Chinese pickles, and they invite her over to make and enjoy dumplings.
Miko is a lady devoted to public service. When she was still in college, she bought origami from South Korea, and taught paper folding to migrant children and special-education kids in Nanjing. Nowadays, she is frequently invited to give lectures on Korean cultures, food, costume, TV dramas and pop stars. She doesn't just give lectures; she puts on Korean costume and headgear herself to show the students. When her little brother came to Nanjing, she asked him to perform taekwondo for the children.
The new year is around the corner. Li Jiaren's grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousin will come from Shandong to Nanjing for the Spring Festival, and the busy season is about to begin for Miko.
